CBS announced the cancellation of the Late Show with\u00a0Stephen Colbert\u00a0\u2013\u00a0just days after the host\u00a0blasted the network\u2019s $16 million settlement\u00a0with President\u00a0Trump\u00a0as a \u2018big fat bribe.\u2019<\/p>\n

Colbert\u2019s show, which began in 2015, will now come to an end in May 2026, executives with the network and Paramount, its new parent company, announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end its historic run in May 2026 at the end of the broadcast season,\u2019 they said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u2018We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire the Late Show franchise at that time,\u2019 the executives continued. \u2018We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and his broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.\u2019<\/p>\n

The network explained that the decision to cancel the show is \u2018purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018It is not related in any way to the show\u2019s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount,\u2019 it added.<\/p>\n

But the announcement comes just days after Colbert slammed the network for settling the president\u2019s lawsuit for $16 million \u2013 with some now questioning whether the cancelation may be political retaliation.<\/p>\n

\u2018If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better,\u2019\u00a0California Sen. Adam Schiff \u2013 who is set to appear on Thursday night\u2019s episode \u2013 posted on X.<\/p>\n

CBS settled President Donald Trump\u2019s lawsuit alleging it falsely edited an interview with then Democratic candidate Kamala Harris for $16 million<\/p>\n

Trump had accused the network of falsely editing an interview with then-presidential candidate\u00a0Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n

Although the network didn\u2019t admit to any journalistic wrongdoing, the massive settlement will\u00a0cover Trump\u2019s legal fees and his future presidential library.<\/p>\n

Paramount also agreed to\u00a0release unedited transcripts\u00a0of 60 Minutes interviews with presidential candidates.<\/p>\n

Colbert, 61, didn\u2019t hesitate to take shots at his parent corporation, confessing in his opening monologue on Wednesday\u2019s episode that he was \u2018offended\u2019 by the actions of his employer.<\/p>\n

The late night host called the lawsuit against CBS a \u2018nuisance,\u2019 and claimed that Paramount could\u2019ve \u2018easily fought it\u2019 \u2013 citing the company\u2019s own words calling the allegations \u2018completely without merit.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018And keep in mind Paramount produced Transformers: Rise of the Beast. They know \u201ccompletely without merit,\u201d\u2018 Colbert joked, poking fun at the Paramount+ film that\u00a0bombed at the box office.<\/p>\n

Colbert then cited a phony statement, joking that the network said, \u2018You may take our money, but you will never take our dignity.<\/p>\n

\u2018You may, however, purchase our dignity for the low, low, price of $16 million. We need the cash.\u2019<\/p>\n

The comedian went on to argue that the settlement was a \u2018big, fat, bribe,\u2019 in light of the company\u2019s\u00a0$8.4 billion\u00a0merger with Skydance, which will need approval from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Colbert joked on Wednesday that his new mustache would make it impossible for the new executives to find and put pressure on him<\/p>\n

The late night host also cited an article from\u00a0Puck, that claimed the merger could \u2018put pressure\u2019 on him to ease up on Trump criticisms.<\/p>\n

The owner of Skydance, David Ellison, has expressed his desire to have a more neutral tone on politics.<\/p>\n

His father, Larry Ellison,\u00a0is also a major Trump supporter who\u00a0joined the president at the White House in January<\/span>\u00a0for the unveiling of a project called Stargate.\u00a0It is now believed the elder Ellison is providing the $8 billion for the CBS deal, according to the\u00a0New York Times.<\/p>\n

But Colbert brushed off the gossip on his show Wednesday, joking that his new mustache will make it impossible for the new executives to find and put pressure on him.<\/p>\n

Just one day later, though, Colbert announced the cancelation of his program.<\/p>\n

\u2018Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending the Late Show in May,\u2019 he told audience members, who responded to the news with emphatic \u2018boos.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s not just the end of our show, but it\u2019s the end of the Late Show on CBS,\u2019 he continued.<\/p>\n
