The award was presented by none other than Leonardo DiCaprio \u2014 a full-circle moment, as De Niro served as Jury President at the very same festival 14 years earlier, back in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And things really heated up during his acceptance speech. Robert De Niro, known for his outspoken criticism of President Donald Trump, didn\u2019t hold back as he addressed the political climate back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dAmerica\u2019s philistine president..\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He kicked off by saying, \u201dIn my country, we are fighting like [expletive] for the democracy we once took for granted.\u201d He went on to add, \u201dThat affects all of us here because the arts are democratic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning his focus to the current U.S. administration, De Niro sharply criticized President Trump\u2019s recent moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmerica\u2019s philistine president has had himself appointed head of one of our premier cultural institutions,\u201d he said, referring to Trump\u2019s appointment as chair of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dWe can\u2019t just all sit back and watch\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Goodfellas<\/em> star also condemned Trump\u2019s new tariff announcement: \u201cHe has cut funding and support to the arts, humanities, and education, and now he has announced a 100 per cent tariff on films that are produced outside the US.\u201d After a moment to let the words sink in, he told the audience, \u201cLet that sink in for a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calling the situation intolerable, De Niro stressed the global implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll these attacks are unacceptable. And this isn\u2019t just an American problem, it\u2019s a global one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wrapped up his speech with a powerful call for action: \u201cLike a film, we can\u2019t just all sit back and watch. We have to act, and we have to act now without violence but with great passion and determination. It\u2019s time for anyone who cares about liberty to organise, to protest, and when there are elections, of course, to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a call to arms to protect education and the arts, all the things Trump and his international \u2018friends\u2019 are frightened of\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
