White House<\/span>\u00a0Press Secretary\u00a0Karoline Leavitt<\/span>\u00a0has slammed\u00a0an Associated Press reporter\u2019s conduct after the pair\u2019s\u00a0tense exchange over tariffs.<\/span><\/p>\n

During a press briefing on March 11, reporter Josh Boak argued with Leavitt about whether President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/span>\u2018s tariffs are tax hikes or tax cuts.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old took the position that tariffs are \u2018a tax cut for the American people\u2019 and said Boak\u2019s question was \u2018insulting\u2019 because according to her, he was \u2018trying to test\u2019 her knowledge of economics.<\/p>\n

Leavitt joined Maria Bartiromo on her\u00a0Fox News<\/span>\u00a0show \u2018Sunday Morning Futures\u2019 when she doubled down on her fiery response, adding that Boak \u2018clearly fails to see President Trump\u2019s long-term economic strategy.\u2019<\/p>\n

She said Trump\u2019s tariffs will \u2018bring in so much revenue\u2019 and \u2018so much wealth into our country\u2019 that the\u00a0Republican party<\/span>\u00a0will be able to make good on its promise to pursue additional tax cuts.<\/p>\n

\u2018[Boak] clearly didn\u2019t understand that very simple idea,\u2019 Leavitt said, before accusing the Associated Press and rest of the mainstream media of chasing viral moments instead of asking \u2018tough questions with honest integrity.\u2019<\/p>\n

Leavitt\u2019s comments come as the\u00a0AP was banned from\u00a0\u2018pooled\u2019 Oval Office visits and Air Force One trips<\/span>\u00a0after the news wire service refused to adopt Trump\u2019s renaming of the Gulf of\u00a0Mexico<\/span>\u00a0to the Gulf of America.<\/p>\n

Boak\u2019s interaction with Leavitt did nothing to mend the relationship between the White House and the nearly 180-year-old news outlet.<\/p>\n

Boak had asked Leavitt about an upcoming Trump speech to the Business Roundtable on that day, where he would later say his tariffs are \u2018having a tremendously positive impact.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018He\u2019s going there today as he\u2019s proposing tax hikes in the form of tariffs. And I\u2019m curious he\u2019s not for why he\u2019s prioritizing that over the tax cuts,\u2019 the reporter asked, echoing business criticism that has crept into the discourse amid market jitters.<\/p>\n

\u2018Not true \u2013 he\u2019s not doing that,\u2019 Leavitt interrupted the question.<\/p>\n

\u2018Tariffs are a tax hike on foreign countries that, again, have been ripping us off. Tariffs are a tax cut for the American people, and the President is a staunch advocate of tax cuts,\u2019 Leavitt told him.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m sorry. Have you ever paid a tariff? Because I have,\u2019 the AP reporter tried to needle her. \u2018They don\u2019t get charged on foreign companies. They get charged on the importers.\u2019<\/p>\n

Leavitt started off her response by talking policy.<\/p>\n

\u2018Ultimately, when we have fair and balanced trade, which the American people have not seen in decades. As I said at the beginning, revenues will stay here, wages will go up, and our country will be made wealthy again,\u2019 said Leavitt.<\/p>\n

Some economists have argued there could be downside risks, like higher inflation, slower growth, an escalating trade war, or even a recession.<\/p>\n

Trump spoke at the Business Roundtable meeting in Washington, D.C. on March 11, the same day Leavitt got into it with Boak. In Trump\u2019s remarks, he said\u00a0tariffs are \u2018having a tremendously positive impact\u2019<\/p>\n
