Holt, 65, announced he is stepping down in a memo sent to staffers Monday,\u00a0ten years after he stepped in to replace longtime fixture Brian Williams on a full-time basis.<\/p>\n

The veteran anchor will now only man his usual spot on Dateline,\u00a0NBC News\u2019 Executive Vice President of Programming Janelle Rodriguez said\u00a0in a statement.<\/p>\n

NBC \u2013 whose asset\u00a0MSNBC just cancelled Joy Reid\u2019s show The ReidOut\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u00a0have\u00a0yet to announce a replacement<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u2018[Holt] will continue at the helm of Nightly until early summer,\u2019\u00a0Rodriguez said, revealing how the anchor will then devote\u00a0\u2018his energy to the rapidly-expanding powerhouse that is Dateline.\u2019<\/p>\n

Holt \u2013 previously the host of the show\u2019s weekend edition \u2013 began hosting Nightly News on weekdays in June of 2015, after\u00a0a scandal surrounding reporting from the\u00a0Iraq War upended Williams\u2019 career<\/span>.<\/p>\n

He has since told staffers his time on the show was an \u2018amazing ride\u2019 \u2013\u00a0 doing so in a letter sent to Nightly and Dateline staffers Monday morning.<\/p>\n

The principal anchor of \u2018Dateline\u2019 since September 2011 did not mention the show\u2019s waning ratings, which are down year-over-year.<\/p>\n

Instead, he expressed excitement about \u2018continuing as anchor of \u201cDateline NBC\u201d\u00a0for the first time \u2018in a full time capacity\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018I am thrilled to be able to work more closely with my enormously talented friends at Dateline as the broadcast continues to grow and attract new viewers.\u2019<\/p>\n

Dateline is currently the 14th most popular show on NBC and is viewed by more than 2.3million people, but like most legacy media broadcasts as of late, is down drastically in terms of viewership when compared with years prior.<\/p>\n

Just two years ago, the magazine-style program that\u2019s regularly compared to CBS\u2019s 60 Minutes or the PBS NewsHour had an average audience of more than 4million.<\/p>\n

NBC Nightly News \u2013 currently behind evening news frontrunner ABC World News Tonight \u2013 is averaging 6.742 million total viewers, down one percent from this time last year.<\/p>\n

The statistic, moreover, was recorded following some gains from the long-running program \u2013 which over the summer was subject to some double digit dips in\u00a0total audience and in the hallowed 25-to-54-year-old demographic.<\/p>\n

Back in July, the show was down 17 percent in total audience from the quarter before and 27 percent in the demographic most valued by advertisers, but has since managed to stop the bleeding.<\/p>\n

However, a change in format\u00a0already spawned a ratings crisis over at rival CBS<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 and Holt, for many viewers at home, has become a fixture.<\/p>\n

In 2021, insiders told Page Six how Llamas was \u2018clearly being groomed for a big role\u2019, and sources told the Ankler in November how higher-ups at the network would be happy to replace Holt with Llamas due to the latter\u2019s comparatively modest salary of $2.5million.<\/p>\n

It is unclear how much Holt was paid for Nightly News.<\/p>\n

Holt\u2019s contract expires this year, and Llamas has experience as an Evening News anchor thanks to time as a weekend host for ABC\u2019s still-successful World News Tonight.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was crushing to watch so many working journalists attempt to generate the words to accurately describe a visibly struggling and diminished president, seemingly unable to complete a sentence or a thought in his disastrous and final debate.\u2019<\/p>\n

Not mentioning any names, the man who for years worked with the likes of Rachel Maddow, Joe Scarborough, and Mika Brzezinski went on to offer one last parting shot at those who refused to face the truth.<\/p>\n

\u2018Say it with me: It is perhaps the ultimate irony that the electoral collapse of the Democratic Party in 2024 was triggered in large part by the man who ran to save the country and democracy \u2013 the same man who then tried to stay too long at the fair.<\/p>\n

\u2018There, I said it,\u2019 he added as sort of signoff. \u2018Now someone please say it into a microphone. You can do it.\u2019<\/p>\n

The dismissal of her show was then followed up by NBC News confirming that\u00a0Lester Holt was out at Nightly News<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the flagship show he has hosted for nearly a decade.<\/p>\n

MSNBC then axed three more stars\u00a0<\/span>on Monday \u2013\u00a0Katie Phang, Jonathan Capehart and Ayman Mohyeldin \u2013 according to the\u00a0New York Post,\u00a0who obtained the insight from a source named only as \u2018MSNBC insider.\u2019<\/p>\n

With a slew of top media professionals getting the boot, many have shared who they think might be next to get ousted, including MSNBC\u2019s Joe\u00a0Scarborough and his wife\u00a0Mika Brzezinski.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Morning Joe\u2019 co-hosts have long been vocal about their opposition toward Trump, even after visiting the Republican back in November in Mar-a-Lago\u00a0to \u2018restart communications.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, other liberal media bigwigs \u2013 who have been put under the spotlight for their overt disdain towards the new president \u2013 may face more scrutiny in coming weeks amid the industry shakeup.<\/p>\n

All eyes are on veteran anchors like George Stephanopoulos, Rachel Maddow, Peter\u00a0Alexander and Mary Bruce \u2013 as fans guess who will survive the cable TV changes.<\/p>\n

Although their show has not been axed, some people have called for Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough\u2019s slot to be culled, following the mass cancellations.<\/p>\n

\u2018MSNBC needs to fire Morning Joe and Mika! Not Joy Reid!!,\u2019 one online user said.<\/p>\n

Brzezinski was\u00a0recently forced to make a legal note about Trump<\/span>\u00a0on the show, appearing to learn a lesson from ABC News\u2019 mishap that ended in a hefty legal bill.<\/p>\n

Scott Galloway, a guest on the show at the time, was discussing the reasons why Trump beat Kamala Harris in November when he incorrectly slammed the president.<\/p>\n

\u2018We are in the midst of a series of small revolutions to correct income inequality. And the reason we put an insurrectionist and a rapist in office is because for the first time in our nation\u2019s history, a 30-year-old man or woman isn\u2019t doing as well as his or his or her parents were at third,\u2019 Galloway said.<\/p>\n

As the \u2018great conversation\u2019 ended, Brzezinski made sure to correct Galloway to his face.<\/p>\n

\u2018I want to make a comment about a word that was used in this interview. Donald Trump was tried civilly and was found libel of sexual abuse, not rape. But the judge in the case likened his actions to rape, but the liability was officially called sexual abuse.\u2019<\/p>\n

Stephanopoulos has also not been named as an anchor whose show was canceled, but his past comments on Trump have landed him and the network in the hot seat.<\/p>\n

Following the media axes, people now believe his next in line as one person posted to X: \u2018When is George Stephanopoulos leaving?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018All we need now is the life of George Stephanopoulos to be gone,\u2019 wrote another.<\/p>\n

Stephanopoulos erroneously claimed on-air that the president-elect was found \u2018liable for rape\u2019 \u2013 rather than the correct phrasing of sexual abuse \u2013 against writer E. Jean Carroll in March.<\/p>\n

Trump sued Stephanopoulos and the network for defamation soon after the segment aired, accusing the anchor of making the statements with \u2018malice\u2019 and a disregard for the truth.<\/p>\n

As part of the $16million settlement, Stephanopoulos was forced to issue a public apology.<\/p>\n

Stephanopoulos has also not been named as an anchor whose show was canceled, but his past comments on Trump have landed him and the network in the hot seat<\/p>\n

He has since isolated himself at the network, insiders told the\u00a0New York Post,\u00a0with some suggesting he may be out of a job by the summer.<\/p>\n

\u2018George seems miserable,\u2019 one source said.<\/p>\n

\u2018He\u2019s definitely gone. He\u2019s a dead man walking for sure.\u2019<\/p>\n

Others, though, said Stephanopoulos could remain at the network in a lower-profile way, possibly working on film and television projects.<\/p>\n

Rachel Maddow (MSNBC)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All eyes are also on MSNBC\u2019s Rachel Maddow, who has long been outspoken about her views on Trump, during the shocking cable TV shakeup.<\/p>\n

In fact, following Reid\u2019s show being canceled, the president mentioned Maddow after saying that the network should pay restitution for \u2018damaging\u2019 the nation, while also branding Reid a \u2018mentally obnoxious racist.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Based on her ratings, which were virtually non-existent, she should have been \u201ccanned\u201d long ago, along with everyone else who works there,\u2019 he said on his Truth Social page.<\/p>\n

Trump then cited a litany of fellow hosts he felt deserved his derision, including Al Sharpton and Rachel Maddow.<\/p>\n

Peter Alexander (NBC News)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alexander, who has already surfaced as a journalist to look out for in the briefing room with Trump\u2019s press secretary Karoline Leavitt, might now find himself in the spotlight after the shakeup at his network.<\/p>\n

Some are even saying he might take over Holt\u2019s spot on NBC Nightly News, but he\u2019s been a vocal critic of Trump\u2019s administration so far.<\/p>\n

\u2018They\u2019ll give it to Peter Alexander,\u2019 someone said online.<\/p>\n

In January, Alexander repeatedly interrupted Leavitt after asking about Trump\u2019s deportation plan for migrants in the US.<\/p>\n

Bringing up how Trump said they would \u2018start with the criminals\u2019, Alexander asked whether violent offenders would really be deported before other immigrants.<\/p>\n

He proceeded to point out how \u2018nearly half\u2019 of the 1,179 migrants arrested on Sunday were found to \u2018have no prior criminal record\u2019, citing NBC\u2019s own reports.<\/p>\n

Alexander, who has already surfaced as a journalist to look out for in the briefing room with Trump\u2019s press secretary Karoline Leavitt, might have all eyes on him now<\/p>\n

Leavitt responded by suggesting that all undocumented migrants would be targeted equally, while touting the effort as \u2018the largest mass deportation operation in American history of illegal criminals.\u2019<\/p>\n

However, the Weekend Today host and Chief White House correspondent kept on with his line of questioning, interrupting Leavitt mid-explanation.<\/p>\n

\u2018I apologize for interrupting. So to be clear, violent criminals do not receive precedence in terms of the deportations taking place,\u2019 he asked.<\/p>\n

\u2018The president has also said two things can be true at the same time. We want to deport illegal criminals, illegal immigrants from this country,\u2019 Leavitt amicably explained.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Mary Bruce (ABC News)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Mary Bruce remains in her legacy position at ABC News, all eyes have been on her since Trump\u2019s inauguration after she went after his appointed press secretary, Leavitt.<\/p>\n

During a recent press briefing, she asked Leavitt\u00a0about Trump\u2019s federal funding freeze, and what she framed as \u2018confusion\u2019 surrounding the subject.<\/p>\n

This earned one of the sternest rebuffs from Leavitt of the day, showing the secretary\u2019s ability to not mince words. Trump rescinded the order anyway, following pushback from House Republicans<\/p>\n

\u2018Some of the confusion I think may be here with this pause on federal funding \u2013 you\u2019ve made it clear you\u2019re not stopping funds that go directly to individuals,\u2019 Bruce asked before the order was nixed, as many engaged in needless hysteria.<\/p>\n

\u2018But there certainly are lots of organizations that receive funding and then may pass along a benefit,\u2019 she pointed out. \u2018Meals on Wheels for one \u2013 they provide meals for over 2.2 million seniors.\u2019<\/p>\n

All eyes have also been on Mary Bruce, another legacy media journalist who\u2019s gone after Leavitt<\/p>\n

\u2018What is the president\u2019s message to Americans out there many of whom supported him and voted for him, who are concerned that this is going to impact them directly?\u2019 the journalist who\u2019s spent 18 years at ABC asked, growing increasingly animated.<\/p>\n

Visibly fed-up, Leavitt offered a response that appeared to put Bruce\u2019s inquiries to bed.<\/p>\n

\u2018I have now been asked \u2013 and answered \u2013 this question four times,\u2019 she began, setting out on a clear, concise explanation.<\/p>\n

\u2018To individuals at home who receive direct assistance from the federal government, you will not be impacted by this federal freeze,\u2019 she continued.<\/p>\n

One liberal anchor who has been open about her disdain for Trump \u2013 and has since had her show canceled \u2013 is Joy Reid.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Sunday it was announced that Reid\u2019s show, The ReidOut, was pulled from MSNBC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hours after the news came out, MSNBC bosses said they were\u00a0struggling to get a hold of Reid<\/span>\u00a0to ask her if she\u2019ll do a final show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Network president Rebecca Kutler revealed the ominous silence while addressing staffers of The Reid Out over the weekend following its cancellation,\u00a0Status News\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n

\u2018We are waiting to get a response from Joy and her team about how she would like to handle that, and we want to defer to her on that,\u2019 Kutler told staff.<\/p>\n

\u2018The hope is that we will have a final show with Joy.\u2019<\/p>\n

Her show is filmed from MSNBC\u2019s South Florida studios, which the network is now set to shutter, sources told the Post.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear when she will host her final installment.<\/p>\n

It was also announced that Mohyeldin, who hosts Ayman\u00a0Mohyeldin Reports, will broadcast its final episode on April 20 at 7pm, a spokesperson confirmed.<\/p>\n
