According to Darcy\u2019s Status newsletter, staffers \u201cexpressed frustration and disbelief, outraged that they had learned of their show\u2019s fate from reports in the press rather than from leadership. Others demanded answers about the reasoning behind the cancellation of \u2018The ReidOut\u2019 and what it meant for their futures at the network.\u201d<\/p>\n
They got their answer: \u201cThe meeting, which lasted nearly 30 minutes, featured pointed questions, raw emotions and a discussion of the changes ahead\u201d \u2014 including the revelation that the entire staff would be laid off, Darcy wrote. Kutler said she hoped the staff would produce the 7 p.m. rotation until the changes take effect in April.<\/p>\n
Status also reported that Kutler held a similar meeting with Alex Wagner\u2019s show staff, which also \u201cquickly grew tense and emotional,\u201d according to audio of the meeting Darcy obtained. The new MSNBC president told both meetings that more than 100 roles at the network will be posted this week and that impacted staffers are encouraged to apply for them, Status noted.<\/p>\n
Kutler also reportedly said she would like Reid to host a final show, but wasn\u2019t sure if she was up to it and is awaiting a response from \u201cThe ReidOut\u201d host\u2019s team. She also told MSNBC employees that the news of Reid\u2019s firing \u2013\u00a0not well-received in certain corners of the Internet on Sunday\u00a0\u2013 is only a part of \u201ca broader slate of programming changes that will be laid out\u201d Monday by the progressive news network.<\/p>\n
MSNBC will replace \u201cThe ReidOut\u201d with a new show hosted by \u201cThe Weekend\u201d anchors Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez in the 7 p.m. ET slot, part of\u00a0Kutler\u2019s vision\u00a0for the network\u00a0moving forward. Wagner will also be replaced during the 9 p.m. spot Tuesday-Friday, but will remain with the network as a correspondent.<\/p>\n
Kutler expressed regret for staffers learning their fate through a press leak, and was asked whether President Donald Trump\u2019s re-election was a factor in any of the decisions \u2013 which she flatly denied. She said changes are based on \u201cdata analysis and programming strategy\u201d to \u201cbest position MSNBC for the year ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
